This is an alterations and additions project to an existing weatherboard dwelling. The owners of this home wanted to create a natural feeling to their upgraded home. The new spaces have been designed to capture sun and direct views into their pool area.
Sustainable Design Strategies
Site Planning
- new living areas were created to open up to the north and maximize the solar access for passive heating in winter
- windows have been positioned to maximize cross ventilation in summer
- overhangs were created to create shade in summer and allow for solar access in winter
Energy
- low energy light fittings were selected, compact fluorescent and low energy globes were used
- installation of hydronic heating panels
Water
- collection of rain water for use in the garden
- installation of a solar hot water system
- low water usage appliances chosen
Materials
- remilled recycled timber floor boards were used
- water based oil finishes were used on the timber floors
- materials are typically FSC or GECA certified
- local products were chosen where possible - including locally made ceramic light fixtures
