The northerly garden at this Northcote property allowed the owner an opportunity to develop a large urban produce kitchen garden. Direct access from the kitchen to the garden was essential in the planning of this home.
Sustainable Design Strategies
Site Planning
- new living areas were created to open up to the north and maximize the solar access for passive heating in winter
- windows have been positioned to maximize cross ventilation in summer
- overhangs were created to create shade in summer and allow for solar access in winter
Energy
- low energy light fittings were selected, LED and low energy globes were used
- installation of hydronic heating panels
Waste
- installation of a grey water diverter from shower and bath for use as subsoil irrigation in the garden
Water
- collection of rain water for use in the garden via a above ground water tank
- installation of a grey water system for use in the garden
- installation of a solar hot water system
- low water usage appliances chosen
Materials
- recycled timber was used on the interior floors
- low VOC paints were used
- waterbased finishes were used on the timber floors
- materials are typically FSC or GECA certified
- local products were chosen where possible
