This is an alterations and additions project to an existing single storey weatherboard dwelling in a heritage zone. In many of the houses we work on, the owners engage us to create quite personalised spaces. In this instance a second living space was added to the rear of the existing dwelling that allows for home life to spill out to the outdoors. Natural materials as well as soft matt finishes add to the very gentle nature of the new spaces. Views into the garden become an important element to the experience of the internal spaces.
Site Planning
- the new living areas in this home were created to open up to the back yard which is south facing
- new north facing clerestory windows were located above the kitchen dining living space to direct north light into this south facing room all day
- windows have been positioned to maximize cross ventilation in summer
- overhangs were created to create shade in summer and allow for solar access in winter
Energy
- an existing pv cell solar system was retained
- hydronic heating panels and hydronic in-slab heating was installed
- a heat pump water heater was installed for the supply of domestic hot water as well as hydronic heating (in-slab and panels)
Water
- collection of rain water for use in the laundry, toilet and garden
- low water usage appliances were chosen
Materials
- an e-crete (cement free) concrete slab was installed
- water based finishes were used
- materials are typically FSC or GECA certified
