Glen Iris House
An existing 1940’s brick veneer house was remodelled and extended. Even though the existing house was orientated north / south, the light levels were low and there was little connection to the existing outdoor spaces. The existing living spaces were remodelled to create a large north facing living area with a direct connection to a new north facing outdoor entertaining space. Materials are typically FSC or GECA certified, finishes are natural or low VOC.
Planning
- the existing living areas were opened up to create a large north facing living space
- windows are positioned to maximize cross ventilation in summer
Energy
- low energy light fittings were selected – compact fluorescent and low energy globes only
- a green wall was built against a west facing building to create shade
Waste
- installation of grey water diverters from laundry, shower and bath for use as subsoil irrigation in garden
Water
- collection of rain water for use in garden
Materials
- recycled bricks
- cypress for all in ground timber
- natural paints (no petrochemicals) in low wear areas
- low VOC paints
- recycled timber floorboards
- natural oil floor finish
- low voc carpets
- local products were chosen where possible
